Description
This is a silver plated cocktail shaker made by E.G. Webster & Sons. It is silver plated over copper and was made in the late 1800's to early 1900's. E.G. Webster died in 1900 and the business was continued by his son, Fred H Webster, until 1928. This piece measures approximately 11 1/2 inches high. While doing an image search I found a very similar piece in an article by WNYC's - New York Public Radio's, Alison Stewart. She has a photo of a cocktail shaker that is very similar to the shaker in this listing. She wrote that "it was part of the barware on the B&O Railroad where Ms. Stewarts' great-uncle was a Pullman Porter."
Wait...this story gets better..
..
Alison continues with this most charming story....." My uncle and my mom were allowed to ride in the car back and forth between Washington and New York," Ms. Stewart said, " and the story goes that the president of the railroad gave the shaker to my mom at some point and told her that Gloria Swanson used it when she took the car."
Soooo...the design of this cocktail shaker is the same but the pattern of the shaker is a different pattern....It is truly a work of fine craftsmanship and over time a work of art.
I hope I gave the proper credit to Alison Stewart.....I enjoyed very much learning more about the history of her wild cocktail shaker that has the same design as the shaker for this listing. It really is a great piece and has a wonderful and warm patina.
